Why I love ceremonial cacao
I’m a self-confessed caffeine addict. Coffee has long been my daily ritual and one indulgence I’ve never quite managed to give up. I don’t have many other vices — I’m now in my sixth alcohol-free year — but coffee remains the one I find hardest to resist. Recently though, I’ve found myself reaching for something else - ceremonial cacao. It’s become my new morning kick-starter, a heart-opening alternative to coffee shots — and here’s why I love it.
A Heart-Opening Elixir
Ceremonial cacao is often called the “food of the gods,” and for good reason. Rich in theobromine — a gentle, uplifting compound — cacao helps me feel energised yet calm, alert yet grounded. It also contains anandamide, known as the “bliss molecule,” which can lift mood and create a sense of warmth and connection. When enjoyed with intention, it’s more than a drink — it’s a small, grounding ritual.
Grounding and Nourishing Energy
Unlike the sharp buzz (and crash) of caffeine, cacao delivers a smoother, more sustained lift. Its rich, earthy flavour feels grounding, and its natural magnesium helps relax muscles and calm the nervous system. I love that it gives me focus and clarity without the edge or the jitters — just steady, balanced energy.
A Ritual of Presence
Preparing cacao encourages a slower start to the day. From whisking the cacao into warm water to holding the cup and breathing in its aroma, it’s a gentle way to arrive. I often drink it before yoga or journaling, and it’s become a simple habit that helps me feel more settled and ready for the day ahead.
Nourishment for Body and Mind
Cacao is naturally rich in antioxidants, iron, and magnesium — all of which support mood, energy, and overall wellbeing. It’s a nourishing choice that feels good for both body and mind.
A Daily Swap That Stuck
What started as a small experiment — replacing my second coffee with cacao — has become a ritual I look forward to. It still feels like a treat, but one that leaves me calm, clear, and centred instead of wired.
Tip: To make your own, whisk 20–25g of ceremonial-grade cacao with hot (not boiling) water. Add a pinch of cinnamon or cayenne if you like, and take a moment to enjoy it slowly.
